“The Diamond Gallery” was established in 1978 by Keith Bird. Keith resigned his position as accountant with a large Sydney based mining company in 1974 and purchased the Cairns branch of “The Sapphire and Opal Centre” from the Sydney owners,turning his hobby of opal & sapphire fossiking in to a career.
The “Tropical Theatre” opposite the “Sapphire & Opal Centre” was purchased and re-developed by a local family. “The Diamond Gallery” was an original tenant commencing business in August 1978.
Keith studied diamond grading through the prestigious “Gemological Institute of America” qualifying in 1981 His certificate is signed by Richard T Liddecoate, acknowledged as the “Father of Gemology” and is Internationally famous for standardising the colour grading of diamonds. The following year Keith studied Colour Gemstones, passing the examination in 1982.
The Diamond Gallery concentrated on the diamond market building up a large following of customers seeking more personal and informed service. After trading at the same location for thirty years. “The Diamond Gallery” was forced to re-locate when the building was sold and re-developed. Keith and his Swedish wife, Agneta moved the business to its present location at 54 Lake Street, Cairns.
